"First, Ralph had never been through the scoring process, and I think all the editing and post was quite daunting and mysterious to him," he says. "And I'd play him ideas, but then it became obvious that he didn't really want any music at all -- or just the bare minimum."Eventually the composer and first-time director compromised on a minimal, often pulsing score that is largely driven by percussion and brass. "Because he's a soldier, I first suggested a lone trumpet -- no tune, no melody, just a single note -- for some cues, and that was insane enough for him that he agreed to it," Eshkeri says. "And then we used taiko drums, timpani, and banged random bits of metal and coiled springs."Although the final score is "100% a classical score, in that it's all written out, it has a punk-rock edge and energy that Ralph really liked in the end," he adds. "It's incredibly stark, but it worked."Eshkeri went straight from that experience to scoring "Johnny English Reborn" for Atkinson and director Oliver Parker. "It couldn't have been more different as they wanted tons of music, a traditional orchestral approach and lots of hummable tunes," he says. "It was all about melodies, and in a big movie like this, you don't get that very much these days, so I was thrilled to have the chance."Ironically, Eshkeri's lush, tuneful submissions, which he overlaid with a rock 'n' roll combo, would often be criticized "as not being melodic enough," he reveals. "I wrote several main themes, and it was difficult to really nail it, as you're working in the Bond idiom, and you don't want to be too derivative, but you can't deny it either."But for all the differences, Eshkeri found working with Fiennes and Atkinson "very similar. AMC Networks Third-Quarter Profit from Continuing Operations Rises

NY - AMC Networks, led by president and CEO Josh Sapan, on Thursday reported a gain in third-quarter profit and revenue as the company continued to see growth in affiliate fees, while advertising revenue was essentially flat due to a lack of Mad Men in the latest period. The company's earnings from continuing operations of $40 million compared with $34 million in the year-ago period. When including discontinued operations in the year-ago period, the bottom line rose 58 percent. Operating profit rose 22.8 percent to $94 million. The bottom line figures were better than Wall Street analysts had expected. Revenue at the company behind such cable networks as AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv rose 4.6 percent to $284 million, slightly below Wall Street expectations. The flagship AMC network has had success with such hit shows as Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. But the company highlighted that its U.S. networks advertising revenue was virtually unchanged from the year-ago period as Mad Men aired then, but not in the latest period. Affiliate fee and other revenue rose 6.9 percent. The earnings report from AMC Networks, which is controlled by the Dolan family that also controls Cablevision, is the firm's second since becoming a standalone company. Wall Street seemed to cheer the bottom line gain, boosting AMC shares by 5.8 percent to $34.42 on Thursday. "The core of our growth strategy continues to be our investment in original programming," said Sapan, highlighting The Walking Dead season two premiere, which was the highest rated drama ever in basic cable history in key adult demos, and the fourth consecutive primetime Emmy for outstanding drama or Mad Men. "Our programming successes are reflected in solid financial results as we continued to increase net revenues, AOCF and operating income in the third quarter." During an earnings conference call, management said a recent Netflix streaming content deal will start adding to AMC Networks' financials in the current fourth quarter. Ad cancellations haven't crept up, and ad prices remain strong in the scatter market, Sapan added. Sapan said new AMC show Talking Dead, a new talk show focused on Walking Dead, is looking like a winner in terms of financials as its viewership is about two times the average for that time period. Could AMC do more scripted shows? Sapan said yes, if they are the right shows and have an economic profile with an incremental return. Asked about the ad outlook for IFC, Sapan said AMC is ahead in its development, with the goal for IFC being revenue growth that can bring in money that can be redirected to further program development. Carry On up the commune?Dropping out of the rat race isn't the newest concept in the world (think Tom and Barbara Good in The Good Life), but it's being given another spin in David Wain's new comedy, Wanderlust. You can take a look at the first trailer below.Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston star as George and Linda, a couple of high-flying NYers who suddenly find themselves having to downshift when he's fired. They try moving to Atlanta, where George's obnoxious brother (Ken Marino) has offered him a job. But when that doesn't work out, they go driving around the country, eventually ending up in error at the Elysium commune. And that's when the trouble really starts.It's a regular trailer, so we're honestly more interested to see what Wain and co can shove into any likely Red Band release, but there are a few chuckles here. And he has definitely recruited a good comedy cast, with the likes of Paul's Joe Lo Truglio featured alongside Alan Alda, Malin Akerman, Justin Theroux and Todd Barry.Given how much Wain and co-writer Marino (who returns to script duty once more here) were able to make of Role Models, we're interested to see them tackling an original movie. Murdoch succession plans under siege

The recent scrutiny surrounding News Corp. has made a Murdoch family succession plan to lead the conglom uncertain. As Steve Jobs' untimely death reminds us, even wealth, power and status can't bestow immortality. Historically the closest one can come is by passing on a legacy, often through heirs. Rupert Murdoch has never hidden his desire to do precisely that, entrusting News Corp., the company he inherited from his father and dramatically built, to his children. And while the 80-year-old mogul would doubtless keep working even if that wasn't the motivation, one rationale for his prolonged stewardship has been to remain until one of his kids is deemed ready to replace him. Yet if the recent shareholder rebuke to Murdoch's sons is any indication, there's ample truth in the notion -- popularized by a John Lennon lyric -- about life being what happens while you're making other plans. Because whatever Murdoch's ambitions, it looks far less likely the family name will still pilot News Corp. when the great man hangs up his spurs. In a sense, Murdoch and his generation of media tycoons -- with a big assist from federal deregulation in the 1990s -- succeeded a bit too well. Freed of restrictions preventing studios from owning broadcast networks, they built vertically integrated companies so big and varied you can't blithely hand the keys to just anybody. It's no slight to the Murdoch progeny to state the obvious: Today's multinational corporations are not the corner drugstore -- or even a big-city newspaper -- however much Murdoch might want to approach his company that way. As Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff wrote back in 2008 before there was any cause to believe something would threaten his succession scheme, "this kind of dynastic construct is met with easy ridicule. It's an extremely difficult modern conceit." Murdoch's current heir apparent, James, will next week again face Britain's Parliament, which is eager to grill him about what he knew and when he knew it in regard to phone hacking at News Corp.'s U.K. tabloids. The scandal has roiled the company, claimed the News of the World and delighted Murdoch's detractors, while raising questions about James' future that were further stoked by the high percentage of stockholder votes against him and his brother Lachlan. Admittedly, annual shareholder meetings are hardly the ideal forum for expressions of moral indignation. As long as companies are profitable and trading prices remain high, many would happily give a thumbs up to Genghis Khan -- who, incidentally, passed along a divided empire to his kids, illustrating similarities between "mogul" and "Mongol" aren't merely phonetic. Not surprisingly, speculation surrounding the hacking inquiry and News Corp.'s succession has triggered numerous mentions of the elder Murdoch as "The Lion in Winter," referring to the James Goldman play turned memorable 1968 movie. The description certainly sounds poetic, but the comparison isn't especially apt. In that story, Henry II's three odious sons are clawing to assume his throne. With the Murdochs, to most appearances it's been the father prodding his middle trio of heirs to embrace their lineage, while the contenders have at times taken themselves out of the game. Once pegged "first among equals" to succeed his dad, Lachlan was said to have clashed with senior execs, relocating to Australia. Elisabeth went off to build Shine into a prolific production entity, before selling to News Corp. for $673 million, which unleashed additional griping about potential nepotism. James has been the proverbial tortoise -- slow and steady wins the race -- until the hacking scandal, which has damaged perceptions of him, particularly among those who already see News Corp. as an evil empire. Thanks to Murdoch, nobody bearing his name -- including his young kids with current wife Wendi -- will ever fret about their next meal. (Full disclosure: I'm a part-time contributor to a News division, Foxsports.com.) By the same token, though, Murdoch can rest easy: His legacy is secure whether the next CEO shares his DNA or not. And Murdoch might not be doing his grown kids any favors saddling them with the crushing burden of this heightened scrutiny. Wolff noted those children have grown up "trapped in the Murdoch bubble."
